BUFFALO, N.Y.--With a 5-0 win against No. 7 seed Ball State (9-11) in the Mid-American Conference Quarterfinal on Friday afternoon at the Ellicott Tennis Center on the University at Buffalo campus, the No. 2 seed Miami University women's tennis team (14-6) advances to the MAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday.
After a one-year absence, the RedHawks return to the MAC Tournament Semifinals and will face No. 6 seed Buffalo at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. The Bulls, who are hosting the 2008 MAC Tournament, upset No. 3 seed Toledo on Friday, 4-3.
The RedHawks swept through doubles, quickly earning the first point of the match. First-Team All-MAC selections freshman Anastasia Dracheva and sophomore Brintney Larson downed BSU's Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.
Freshmen Megan Martzolf and Cara Wald had an identical result at No. 2 doubles as the tandem defeated Sophie Quist and Georgina Thompson, 8-1. Senior Leda Pesatova and freshman Sydnee Bridger also were dominant at No. 3 doubles, topping Emma Retter and Katherine Rist, 7-2.
Miami picked up four singles wins--with the last two finishing at the same time--en route to the 5-0 win. Because the win was in hand for the RedHawks, matches in the third and fifth flights were not completed.
Dracheva downed Quist at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Larson topped Calderwood 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Martzolf pounded out a 6-1, 6-2 win in the fourth flight against Retter. Wald posted a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles against Thompson in the winning effort.
After a 6-3 win in the first set, Pesatova was leading Pollack 3-2 in the second set at No. 3 singles before her match was suspended. Senior Kelly Douple opened up with a 6-1 win at No. 5 singles but dropped the second set 2-6 and was leading BSU's Haley Hall 1-0 in the third set before her match was suspended.
