With Miami's starting linebacker trio of Joey Hudson, Clayton Mullins and Caleb Bostic all sidelined with injuries, back-up linebackers Alex Kaufman, Chris Shula, Scott Madsen and Ryan Kennedy all posted impressive tackle numbers. Kaufman, a redshirt freshman from Lakota West High School, led the way with 12 stops, followed by Shula and Madsen who accounted for eight tackles apiece. Morris Council had 2.5 quarterback sacks to lead that category.
Offensively, RedHawk quarterbacks completed 36 of their 58 pass attempts, gaining 292 yards through the air. Redshirt freshman Clay Belton was 19 of 31 for 193 yards and a touchdown, while junior signal-caller Daniel Raudabaugh completed 15 of his 21 attempts for 78 yards. Their primary receivers were Chris Given with eight catches for 71 yards, Eugene Harris with six grabs for 51 yards, and Armand Robinson who hauled in five passes for 89 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass from Belton. The RedHawk running game was led by Thomas Merriweather who netted 57 yards on 11 carries, including a 31-yard gain.
"I thought the defense played extremely well," said head coach Shane Montgomery. "They really picked up from where they left off last year. Considering that the defense had five starters out, some of our young kids like Alex Kaufman did some really good things."
"The offense hurt itself by having a touchdown called back and having some sacks and penalties that put us in a lot of third-and-long situations," Montgomery said. "We need some continuity. We're not putting enough good plays together. We had a chance to make some plays, but we just didn't hit many tonight. All spring, we've been talking about putting together some big plays on offense, but the defense was dominant tonight."
Regarding the quarterback dual between Raudabaugh and Belton, Montgomery said that the competition will continue into the drills in August.
"Daniel is doing some good things, but he's got to continue to get consistent," said Montgomery. "Clay has made great strides throughout the spring and he needs more reps to build his confidence. The key is that we've got to continue to bring along the other elements to help them. We've got to continue to find ways to run the football and hit some big plays in our passing game. If we can do that, it will take a little bit of pressure off the quarterback so that we don't ask them to do too much. It's hard to sustain long drives time after time. Those are the kinds of things that hurt us last year and that we'll continue to work on. Everybody just has to step up."
Miami opens its 2008 season at home on Thursday, August 28, when the RedHawks host Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt.
