Box Score

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -Junior right-hander John Ely (Homewood, IL/Flossmoor) kept the RedHawks within striking distance in his six innings of work, giving up just two runs, one earned, and striking out seven, but the Miami University baseball team dropped to .500 on the season (2-2) after a 2-0 loss to the University of Evansville this afternoon at Braun Stadium.. His counterpart Ben Norton threw seven scoreless innings for the win.

Evansville started the scoring in the second when Pat Tumilty doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. From there the Aces scratched out the run as he advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kern Watts, giving Evansville a 1-0 lead.

The RedHawks looked to even the score a half inning later after sophomore catcher Josh Hula (Castalia, OH/Margaretta) tripled to left center to open the inning. The rally was cut short two batters later when Hula was caught trying to score on a passed ball.

The Purple Aces added another run in the bottom of the sixth as they strung together back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning, capped off by Tumilty's RBI knock through the left side. Tumilty finished the day 2-for-4.

Senior Matt Brinkmann closed out the game for Evansville, holding the RedHawks hitless over the final frames and nailing down the 2-0 win.

Freshman right-hander Reece Asbury (Centerville, OH/Centerville) threw the final two innings for Miami allowing just two base runners. Ely took the loss for Miami and is 0-1. Second baseman Evan Armitage (Milford, OH/Milford) and left fielder Chris Nadeau (Saline, MI/Saline) picked up the RedHawks other two hits.
